Updated: Apr 24

The cost of botox for TMJ can range from $500 to $2000 but it depends on how many units you're getting and how much your doctor is charging per unit.

How TMJ severity affects botox cost

The cost for TMJ botox treatment will depend on how severe your condition is because the severity affects the units or quantity that you'll need. Essentially the more severe it is, the more you may need injected into the muscles.

The table below is an example of how many units you may need for various severities.

The more you need injected the more it will cost you!

Of course this also means that if your temporomandibular joint pain is fairly mild, you may not even need any botox. Perhaps just wearing a night guard may be sufficient to alleviate your symptoms and that will also save you quite a bit of money.

Cost per unit affects TMJ botox cost

An important factor which greatly affects TMJ treatment with botox is the cost of living in your area which consequently influences the cost per unit.

Cost of living affecting cost per unit:

  • Clinics located in high cost of living area will most likely charge more per unit.

  • Clinics located in low cost of living area will more likely charge less per unit.

On average, we've heard from various colleagues who charged anywhere from $10 per unit on the lower end to even $20 per unit of botox towards the higher end.

If the office that you are going to looks swanky you should expect to spend more. All of this is attributed to the cost of living which affects the practice's overhead.

Can botox be cheaper?

If you come across offers for very cheap TMJ botox injections such as below $10 per unit, you may want to cross reference and double check to make sure it is a legit medical/dental office.

There has been recent reports from the CDC warning about fake botox injections. People who received these ended up in the hospital with many adverse effects. As of April 15 2024 there is an open federal investigation looking into this case.

Verdict

Overall, the cost for TMJ botox can range from $500-$2000 depending on the severity of your condition and also the cost of living in your area. Hello, I'm Dr Chen and I'm an actively practicing dentist in Long Island City, NY. I graduated from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in 2016 but prior to going to dental school I was already working in the dental field. It's been more than a decade since I first got to know dentistry and let me tell you, time flies by quickly. Since then I've developed a fondness for writing, which is how this all got started!
