Invisalign - Long Island City, NY

What is Invisalign?

We are an INVISALIGN provider. Invisalign is a treatment for straightening out teeth using clear aligners. It is an alternative to metal braces. Invisalign is the original clear aligner with the longest history of established results. All of the clear aligners out there in the open market utilize an algorithm to align the teeth. The more data points that they have, the more accurate the algorithm will be for moving your teeth. Invisalign is the oldest and consequently has the most data out of all of the brands out there. Therefore, their results are the most predictable compared to the rest.

Typical treatment may last anywhere from 6-24 months depending on how complex your case is. It would also depend on how much you are change. Are you just trying to straighten the front teeth or are you trying to fix your bite as well? We can design the plan to be as complex or as simple as you want because each plan is customized for you. Spacings, missing teeth, and tooth gaps are not a problem.

Instead having metal brackets and wire in your mouth, you will wear clear plastic trays to move your teeth. The trays are worn for 20-22 hours per day minimum. You take them off just to eat and also to drink, more on that later! You would switch to a new set of trays on average every 2 weeks with each set feeling just a tad tighter than the last. Depending on your specific case, we can speed up the time that you switch out trays or slow down the time as well. It could be anywhere from 1-3 weeks per set of trays.

A word of caution, you will feel your teeth a little looser but that is the same for the metal braces as well. It is just the natural process of  being able to move the teeth. You may feel a little discomfort from the trays moving your teeth but it is no where near as uncomfortable as metal braces. The metal braces can cut your lips and cause pain.

Taking care of them is also quite easy. You can read our guide on how to clean your invisalign trays.

The process of Invisalign with our dentist in long island city

  1. If you are interested the first thing you need to do is book a consultation with us, either call or self schedule online. We're conveniently located in Long Island City right next to the MoMa PS1.

  2. We need to do a comprehensive exam and then take orthodontic records. These records consists of

    • An impression of your upper and lower teeth.

    • Photos of your facial profile and also of your teeth

    • Full mouth of xrays

  3. These records get sent to Invisalign and then a comprehensive plan showing each step comes back and we bring you back in to make sure that you are ok with all of their recommendations. Once we get approval for you, invisalign will start fabricating your case.

  4. You would wear your trays for 2 weeks straight for at least 20-22 hours per day. You would only remove them to eat and drink. After 2 weeks you would switch to the next set of trays.

  5. We also give you at least 2 sets of trays every visit, so you only have to drop by our office approximately once a month. These monthly visits are fairly short but its what lets our dentists keep tabs on you to make sure that you are on track with your teeth straightening.

    • NOTE: Some of these monthly checks have specific requirements that we check for. Such as if a spacing has closed. If you are off track, we sometimes need to take new impressions and send for a correction. If you kept going without monitoring by a dental professional, we could end up with a disastrous result! It would also add to your total treatment time as well so it is in your best interest to catch any errors very early on.

  6. Last but not least, in many cases in order to gain more "leverage" and "traction" on your teeth, clear aligners require some very small white fillings on your teeth. These are called attachments which help move teeth better. It allows the clear trays to have a better "grip" on your teeth. Let us tell you, these tiny white buttons are way more aesthetic than a metal bracket on your tooth!

    • Are you wondering when do these attachments come off? They stay on the entire procedure but there are times where you can remove them a little bit sooner.

We understand that you really want to start straightening teeth right away but we CANNOT SKIP STEPS. At our dental office, we like to do things the RIGHT way and we promise to treat the LIC community the same way we would treat our own family members. With that clear, there are two requirements:

  1. Cavity free - You should be brushing and flossing more frequently when undergoing any type of orthodontic therapy. Braces trap food for easily and the clear trays will push even closer to your teeth! This is why if you do have cavities when you start straightening your teeth, they will actually grow faster. This makes it imperative for you to be cavity free prior to starting but don't worry, as part of our comprehensive exam, we make sure you're cavity free before we let you take the impressions!

  2. Gums are healthy - This is the most overlooked aspect. A lot of people may not have cavities but their gums are not healthy. If you have active gum disease and you start treatment, it will make your gum disease significantly worse and make it progress faster. You will start losing bone at a much faster rate... At the end of your straightening you may find your teeth very loose and will need to be removed.

    • This is because your gums and the bone surrounding your teeth are the foundation for which your teeth sit on. The foundation needs to be solid prior to moving teeth. For more information please refer to our gum health page.
