Benefits:

  • Pain reduction

  • Better sleep

Procedure Steps: 45 minutes

Our patients often tell us that the botox injections do not hurt or they hurt a lot less than dental injections for fillings. Regardless, if you do feel something it would be just a tiny little pinch at most.

  1. Identify the masseter and/or temporalis muscle injection sites.

  2. We may mark the areas with a facial marker.

  3. Reconstitute the Botox with sodium chloride.

  4. Inject into the TMJ muscles.

Caution: Please do not rub your face for the rest of the day (minimum 3-4 hours).

Costs

Unfortunately, botox for TMJ is not covered by dental insurance. Aside from night guard coverage, most of the insurances have very little benefits for TMJ treatments in general.

FAQs

What to expect afterwards

The injection sites for tmj botox may look a little red and swollen. There may be tiny specks of blood from where the needle punctures the skin. All of these signs/symptoms should self-resolve over the next few hours. The most important thing to remember is to not rub/touch your face for the rest of the day or at least 3-4 hours afterwards.

When it starts working

On average, it takes about 1 week for most patients to begin feeling the effects of the botox for TMJ. However a lot of our patients often do begin to notice a difference after as little as 2-3 days but this is highly individualistic.

How long does it last

Typically, the botox effect will gradually increase and peak after about 4 weeks. After that the effects will begin to decrease/fade over the next few months. Most patients can expect it to last about 3-6 months depending on the individual. Each person is different and the mileage will vary. If yours have worn off, you can simply book another appointment to have it done again.
