USPS Long Island City - Info and Parking
Updated: Jul 17, 2022
Welcome to your neighborhood USPS at Long Island City. How is it, what is it like, and is there any parking? There are actually two of them but we will mostly focus on the bigger and more historic one since that is the one our LIC dentists usually go to.

Background information
There are two USPS in Long Island City, one of them is a stand alone two story building and the other one is a small satellite branch office. The bigger of the two locations, located at 4602 21st Street, Long Island City, NY 11101 is massive in size because it has two floors and a large loading dock in the back. Only the first floor is accessible to customers.
The stand alone building was built in 1928 by the Office of the Supervising Architect for the US Treasury under director James A. Wetmore. The office designed federal government buildings from 1852 and until 1939. It was designed as a brick building with limestone trims in the Colonial Revival style. The appearance definitely makes the building stand out from all of the nearby buildings.
This United States Post Office in long island city was actually designed as part of the National Register of Historic Places back in 1989. Therefore, the building will be continually preserved with a separate budget from the federal government.
The smaller USPS branch office is located at 4254 23rd St, Long Island City, NY 11101 and it is a part of a newer building. It is on the ground floor with its own separate entrance. It is significantly smaller than the other more renowned USPS.

Parking
There is no dedicated customer parking lot for the larger stand alone USPS location. There are a couple of metered spots directly outside on the same block. Please be aware that the middle section is reserved for USPS and there is a no standing sign but in front and behind that section are both metered parking. Both sides can fit approximately three cars each.
Alternatively, you can also park across the stress where the MoMA PS1 is or you can go further up or down the blocks as well. They are all metered parking.
How busy does it get?
Surprisingly, it doesn't ever get too busy when compared to some of the USPS locations deeper into Queens. Whenever our long island city dentists have to come here to mail out packages, the most people that they've seen while waiting on line was 5 people. On average, there would only be around 1-3 people there. Also, it is no surprise to most people but the lines do move slow but that is an inherent quality of USPS.
For the smaller location, we've heard that it doesn't ever get busy at all since it is so tiny. Although there have been complaints there surrounding how the teller goes on lunch break from 12-4:30PM when they close at 5pm...
Overall, our dentists in long island city can't complain too much about the location since it is close by to our office and serves its purpose. It is literally a 2 minute walk, where we walk up Jackson Ave and then take a left on Beanstalk Cafe. This location is definitely not as bad as the two USPS locations located in flushing.
Alternative
But if you are asking us, where we PREFER to mail out most of our packages, it would have to be City Mailroom, which is just another 2 blocks up from the USPS. They've much better hours and they're open rain, shine, or snow storm. Chris is the one always working there... hopefully they can find him some help soon. Sometimes we see that he gets a helper but then they don't last more than a week!
